In-Depth Information

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Insurance

When renting a car through 1 800 Fly Europe fire insurance and third party liability will be included in the rate unless advised otherwise. In the event the inclusive rate is selected the rate will include the Collision Damage Waiver and in most cases Theft insurance.

Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Protection are very beneficial to have on a rental vehicle for in the event of an accident or theft it releases the client from full financial responsibility of the vehicle. Most rental suppliers will still have a deductible that the client will still be responsible for in most cases, however many rental suppliers offer a supplementary insurance locally that may reduce the amount of the deductible.

In most countries, with the exception of Italy the CDW and Theft are optional and the client has the right to refuse it. If in the event the client wishes to decline the CDW and Theft insurance they must sign their initials on the "Decline CDW" box located on the European Rental Agreement. In the event the CDW and Theft are declined and the client wishes to use coverage from their credit card or personal insurance policy we at 1 800 Fly Europe ask for you take the following into consideration:

Credit Card Coverage

Please check with your credit card company to see if they have any restrictions regarding the types of rentals vehicles they cover. Please note the following are the most common restricted vehicles:

  • Off road and 4x4 vehicles
  • Trucks, cargo vans, full sized vans and camper vans
  • Exotic Cars (Ferrari, Porsche, ect.)
  • Antique Cars (anything over 20 years old or that has not been produced in the last 10 years)
  • Vehicles valued at or over $50,000 (BMW 730, Mercedes-Benz S320, ect)

Other concerns with credit card coverage:

  • Rental length limitations (many credit cards will only cover rentals of 30 days or less)
  • Some credit card companies will not cover rentals commencing in a specific country, the most common countries are: Italy, Ireland, Israel, New Zealand, Australia and travel into Eastern Europe.
  • To extend coverage to another driver they must be signed on and listed on the European Rental Agreement.
  • Many credit card companies will file a claime with the personal insurance company of the client before the deductible is reimbursed. This could affect the client's premium and personal driving record
  • Many credit card companies will require a copy of the repair bill paid by the client. Most credit card companies will have a specific time period for when the client is to submit the documentation.
  • Most credit card companies will not cover rentals if the card was issued outside of the United States.

Personal Automobile Coverage

  • The coverage is often times limited to the values of the client's personal car, not the rental vehicle.
  • Many policies will only cover a rental vehicle in the event the client's personal car needs to be repaired.
  • The client's insurance premium could increase due to a claim. The client's policy could be cancelled due to being placed in a "high risk" bracket.
  • Most policies will not cover the damage or theft to personal possessions, third party liability or medical costs.

At this time 1 800 Fly Europe would like to advise all of itÂ’s clients that it is their responsibility to check with their credit card company or insurance provider to determine their coverage.
