Visit Dickens World during UK travels

Feb 14, 2012
Just about an hour east of London, guests can travel back in time to a period when the British capital was filled with soot, pickpockets, cobblestones, gas lamps and Victorian accents. The London of the 1850s has been recreated in Kent at Dickens World, a park that recreates the societies of the classic author's novels including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations and A Christmas Carol. Travelers who book cheap flights to London can make a day trip to the literary park, which entertains kids and adults of all ages.

Complete with a Great Expectations boat ride, attendees of the park can tour the area by gliding along the creek that winds around the entire facility. The park does not leave out the gritty details of the Victorian era, either. To give families an authentic experience of the somewhat-primitive times of the mid-19th century, they even adorn the park with chemical "smell pots" that emit unusual aromas often present throughout the streets during the Victorian age.

A tour through the park can also help students gain a thorough understanding of the classic literary works. Children can interact with characters like Oliver Twist, the criminal Fagin or Nancy, as actors who play the fictional people wander throughout the park to mingle with guests.

While Dickens' vivid story-telling may already bring the tale to life, booking cheap flights to the UK and visiting the author's amusement park can make fans of his writing feel as though they are the main characters of their favorite books.
