Witness the spectacular floats of the Acireale Carnival

Jan 31, 2012
Throughout February, travelers who book cheap flights to Italy can witness one of the most celebrated festivals in the country. The Carnival of Acireale tours the city until the end of February with hundreds of floats made of paper mache and flowers, entertainers, and a massive crowd that cheers on the spectacle.

These structures are not just the everyday traveling platforms. The paper mache figures depict celebrities, politicians, animals and fantasy creatures that are brought to life by mechanical movements. Internal lights inside the massive structures create visually stimulating, glowing characters that captivate crowds as they glide past. The other flowery floats catch the eyes of spectators with thousands of blossoms crafted together to portray specific figures.

While the spectacular productions float past during the parade, Italian dancers, masked performers and energetic marching bands with everyday kitchen utensils as instruments pave the streets with one-of-a-kind entertainment. The crowd, able to roam free around the parade circuit, is the largest component of the carnival and is highly encouraged to join in the fun, dancing, singing and playing their own unique instruments down each block.

A tradition that began centuries ago, the modern-day Acireale Carnival stays true to its roots - although instead of throwing eggs and vegetables at each other as they did in the past, today's show-goers spray silly string or throw paper confetti along the streets. Travelers who book cheap flights to Rome, Venice and other Italian cities can venture to Sicily and witness the magnificent historic event.
