Dragon Boat Festival (Tuen Ng)

June 23, 2012

This festival celebrates the life of a Chinese national hero (Qu Yuan) who drowned himself in protest of government corruption 2000 years ago. The townspeople tried to save him, but as the legend is told, they were unable to pull the poet from the water, so the people threw dumplings into the river to keep the fish from disturbing his body. Today the focal point of the festivities are the dragon boat races.

Food Expo 2012

August 16 - August 20, 2012

This annual expo showcases the very best of Hong Kong cuisine over this 5 day expo. Visitors can expect over 600 exhibitors, hailing from over 24 countries. Visitors have the opportunity to try cooking from all over the world in this festival of food. Other events of this expo include cooking classes, cooking demonstrations and celebrity cooking demonstrations. The expo brings in about 350,000 people each year.

Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Festival
September 30, 2012

This event takes place in the evening, and it celebrates a 14th century war victory. Messages were hidden in cakes and were delivered to compatriots so that they would know when to attack the enemy. Today, moon pies are gifted to family members, and paper lanterns are lit in the evenings when the biggest and brightest moon of the year is visible.
