Maslenitsa Festival

Maslenitsa which literally translates to "Butter Week" is a celebration of Russia's oldest folk traditions - the end of the long winter. In St. Petersburg many parties take place all over the city with essential one purpose; eating sweets and enjoying the celebration. There are also parades which depict many Russian fairytale characters. The centerpiece is the bliny, which is a type of Russian pancake which symbolizes the sun (golden, oval and warm) which is prepared with sour cream and caviar or honey and jam and washed down with lots of vodka.

Defenders of the Motherland Day

Each year on Febuary 23rd locals commemorate Russia's Defenders of the Motherland Day, by hanging wreaths at Moscow's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Following this day the monument is covered with an amazing carpet of flowers.

Festival of French Jazz

The Sixteen Tons club in Russia is home to the Festival of French Jazz. Jazz artists from all over Russia attend to play to the large crowd all the way into the night.

White Nights
St. Petersburg, Russia

In the middle of summer for about a month the sun never fully sets in St. Petersburg. Locally this is known as "Beliye Nochi or the White Nights. When the sun sets the town is left in an eerie half-light. There are fireworks and all night parties all over the city.
